Best 10 Apps to Use in Thailand

If you’re planning a trip to Thailand, you’ll want to make sure you have all the right tools to make your trip as smooth as possible. Luckily, there are a variety of apps available that can help you navigate the country, communicate with locals, and find the best places to eat and visit. Here are 10 apps that I recommend for anyone traveling to Thailand.

Thailand, Bangkok traffic

You can easily access the apps I recommend you to use in Thailand from the table. But I would like to list the most important applications again here before starting the article.

Google/Apple MapsProvides directions, traffic updates, and public transportation information
In DriveYou can write a price other than the price suggested.
GrabA ride-hailing app similar to Uber
AgodaA popular hotel booking app with competitive rates

While spending time in Thailand, I used a lot of the apps I will share below. Whether you are in Phuket, Bangkok or the islands of Thailand, you can improve the quality of your trip with these apps.

Best Navigating App in Thailand

Thailand can be overwhelming for first-time visitors, but with the right apps, getting around can be a breeze. Here are a few apps I find useful for navigating Thailand.

Using Google Maps & Apple Maps

Both apps are on your phone by default. Most of the time these apps will help you navigate and find places. They make it very easy to see the traffic situation and find the locations of places. You can even see ratings, pictures and menus.

ViaBus for Public Transport

If you’re looking to save money on transportation, ViaBus is a great option. The app provides real-time information on bus routes and schedules, so you can plan your trip accordingly. You can also use the app to purchase tickets and track the location of your bus in real-time. ViaBus is available in several cities across Thailand, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.

Grab Taxi for Convenient Rides

Grab Taxi is a popular ride-hailing app in Thailand. The app allows you to book a taxi or private car with just a few taps on your phone. You can choose from several different types of vehicles, including standard taxis, luxury cars, and even motorcycles. Grab Taxi is available in most major cities in Thailand, and the app provides real-time updates on the location of your driver.

Tips: Especially on motorcycle trips, you can get information about local food, drink and places to see in the region. I want to leave a picture here from a trip where we were stuck in traffic. But since you are on a motorcycle, even if there is traffic, the journeys do not take too long.

Thailand Motocycle trips while using app

You can also order food through the app and track it live.

Moovit for River Boats

If you’re planning to travel by boat in Thailand, Moovit is a must-have app. The app provides real-time information on boat routes and schedules, so you can plan your trip accordingly. You can also use the app to purchase tickets and track the location of your boat in real-time. Moovit is available in several cities across Thailand, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.

Extra Suggestion: In Drive

Another very popular app in Thailand is In Drive. With this app, you can quickly ride-hailing a car or a motorbike. The best part of the application is that when you call a car, you can write a price other than the price suggested to you for the locations you want to go and wait for the driver to arrive. A great app for digital nomads!

It automatically marks your current location and you type in your destination. It shows an estimated price. If you press the “Find Driver” button, a car will arrive at that price and at the end of the journey you can pay the fare and rate it.

In Drive Thailand travel app

You can lower the cost or raise it if you want to find a driver very quickly. I write 50 Baht and it said you can write a minimum of 83 Baht. I clicked on the “Raise 83 Baht” button and 2 minutes later I reached my desired location, paying 83 Baht.

In Drive app Thailand

You can choose a motorbike instead of a car. And when you reduce the cost, you can complete this trip for 40-50 Baht. This is very useful if you are a backpacker traveling alone.

Overall, these apps have made navigating Thailand much easier for me. Whether I’m traveling by bus, taxi, or boat, I can always find the information I need with just a few taps on my phone.

Honestly, I only use these apps for hard-to-reach destinations and to get to the airport, the rest of the time I can discover many more places on foot, often amazing waterfalls that don’t show up on the map or cafes in nature.

Best Useful Food and Dining App for Thailand

When it comes to food and dining in Thailand, there are a ton of options to choose from. Here are a few apps that I’ve found helpful for finding great places to eat and getting discounts on meals.

But I would argue that the best local food is best found by traveling. Sometimes you can use these apps, but the best food is found by walking around the city.

Wongnai for Local Restaurants

Wongnai is a great app for finding local restaurants in Thailand. It has a huge database of restaurants, complete with reviews and ratings from other users. Using Wongnai, I found great local food that was hard to discover. You can select location and price by filtering in the app. If you have searched for local food before and couldn’t find it, you can find it with this app.

FoodPanda for Food Delivery

FoodPanda is a popular food delivery app in Thailand. It’s super convenient for those times when you don’t feel like going out to eat or cooking at home. With FoodPanda, you can order food from a huge range of restaurants and have it delivered right to your door. The app also lets you track your delivery in real-time, so you’ll know exactly when your food will arrive.

Communication and Language

You don’t need to speak Thai to communicate in Phuket, Bangkok or any other island in Thailand. Since it is a tourist and nomad country, everyone knows English at an intermediate level.

You do not need to use an application for this. If you went to a country like China, you would have to use Line instead of WhatsApp, but there is no such situation here. It is enough to learn the simple sentence patterns of the country you are visiting for tolerance and kindness. Learning phrases like Hello, How much does this cost, Can you give me a discount, have a nice day, etc. will make it easier for sellers to give you an extra discount when you buy something. I’m writing this as a secret Tips.

Here are some of the most basic of Thai phrases:

  • Hello : Sawatdii
  • How are you? : Sabaaidii mai?
  • I’m fine : Sabaaidii
  • Thank you : Khop kun
  • Sorry : Khot hort
  • No problem : Mai bpenrai
  • Goodbye : Bai
  • What is your name? : Kun chuu arai?
  • My name is __ : Pŏm / Chán chuu __.
  • How much? : Taorai
  • Very expensive : Paang mak
  • Can you reduce the price? : Lod noi dai mai
  • I want this one : Ao annii

If you want to learn more phrases, you can simply check this site.

Finally, it is enough to use WhatsApp in Thailand. When you meet someone new, you can get their number using WhatsApp. Or when you rent a motorbike, rent an Airbnb, you can contact them using WhatsApp. Even Instagram can be enough to get in touch and get acquainted.

Accommodation and Booking

When it comes to finding accommodation in Thailand, there are plenty of options available. I have found these apps to be the most helpful for booking my stays:

If you are already a frequent traveler, you are already familiar with apps like Airbnb, Agoda, Booking. I am adding these apps to this article to be included in the guide of the best apps to use in Thailand and to briefly talk about my experiences.

Agoda for Hotel Deals in Thailand

Agoda is a great app for finding hotel deals in Thailand. It has a wide selection of hotels, resorts, and guesthouses to choose from, and the prices are often very competitive. I have used Agoda to book many of my stays in Thailand, and I have always been happy with the results.

One of the things I like about Agoda is that it often has special deals and discounts that are not available on other booking sites. The app is also very user-friendly, and it’s easy to search for and book accommodation.

agoda thailand booking

Pros & Tips about Agoda: Unlike other accommodation apps, you can find constant discounts on Agoda. Apart from the mobile app, you can look for discounts on the Agoda website. You can even click on the same hotel again as a different user in the hidden tab and sometimes it will give you extra discounts that way.

Booking.com for Accommodation: Phuket & Bangkok and Others

Booking.com is another great app for finding accommodation in Thailand. It has a huge selection of hotels, hostels, and guesthouses to choose from, and the prices are often very reasonable.

Phuket accommodation with booking

I used it several times in Bangkok and the filtering options were very helpful in finding the kind of hotels I wanted. Clearly seeing the reviews of travelers who have stayed in that hotel or hostel before was influential in your choices. That’s why I love Booking.

TripAdvisor for Reviews

TripAdvisor is not a booking app, but it is a great resource for finding reviews of hotels and other accommodation in Thailand. I always check TripAdvisor before booking any accommodation to see what other travelers have to say about it.

tripadvisor phuket reviews

I like about TripAdvisor is that it has a lot of reviews from real travelers, so you can get a good sense of what to expect from a particular hotel or guesthouse. The app also has a lot of photos, which can be helpful in deciding whether or not to book a particular property.

Currency and Money Management

As a tourist you can use your bank cards in Thiland. This includes withdrawing money from ATMs and using your card for shopping.

But be aware that banks charge a commission when you withdraw Thai baht from the bank. It doesn’t matter if you withdraw very little or a lot of money, you have to pay a fixed fee of ฿200 (approximately $5.65). You can easily exchange your USD/Eur for baht at the exchange places. This is one way to use your money in Thailand.

There are not many apps I can recommend under this heading, you can spend your money in traditional ways. But I can give you a small suggestion to secure yourself against all kinds of incidents.

Step by step how to spend money safely in Thailand

  • Get an account using online banking platforms like Zen, Wise.
  • Top up your online bank account with the amount of money you want to spend during your trip.
  • Then add your Wise or other card to the wallet app on your phone.
Payment method for Thailand
  • I added my Zen Card, so you can spend securely when shopping in stores.

It is best to keep cash in your wallet as you will be spending mostly in local places. 🙂

Travel Planning

As I plan my travels, I find joy in crafting a personalized itinerary that caters to my interests and preferences. Researching destinations, activities, and accommodations allows me to curate a journey that promises unforgettable experiences.

Trip to Thailand for Pre-Planning

Before embarking on a trip to Thailand, it’s essential to do your research and plan ahead. As a first-time traveler to Southeast Asia, I found that pre-planning made my trip more enjoyable and less stressful. Here are some tips for pre-planning your trip to Thailand:

  • Obtain a passport and visa if required
  • Research the best time to visit Thailand
  • Decide on your itinerary and book accommodations in advance
  • Check for any travel advisories or health warnings
  • Learn about Thai culture and customs
  • Pack appropriately for the weather and activities planned
